ARIAS, FORMER PRESIDENT OF PANAMA, DIES Treated in Boston for Heart Ailment President Harmodio Miami, Dec. 23 UR -Former Panama died early today aboard an air liner en route from Boston to Panama by way of Miami. Arias, father-in-law of Margot Fonteyn, British ballerina, had left Massachusetts General hospital at Boston, at 9 a. m. yesterday.

Arias, 76, was treated for heart trouble. The former president was returning home, according to Panama's embassy in Washington, because Boston physicians had informed the family that there was no hope of improvement in his condition. Arias was president of Panama from 1932 to 1936. He was publisher of the Pan American, a newspaper published in Panama's capital. He also had interests in two other newspapers there, La Hora and Critica, and was a prominent lawyer.

Earlier in his career, Arias had held various government posts, including minister to the United States and Argentina. He was a delegate to the first League of Nations assembly. A revolution engineered by his brother, Arnulfo, brought Arias to power. He headed a transition regime after President Florencio Harmodio Arosem*na was overthrown in 1931, and won election to a four-year term the next year. Under his regime, the United States and Panama signed a treaty in 1936 that established joint responsibility for the security of Panama and the Panama canal.

He was born July 3, 1 1886, in Penonome, Panama, and was educated as a lawyer in Britain: LAIN SON Funeral Information NORTH CHAPEL PHONES, MONDAY LOngbeach ASHLAND-AV. 1-2645 -Geo. N. Sr. 10 a a.
